Making a Crochet Pattern

I thought I would give you an insight into how I make a pattern.

First, I have 30 plus years of crochet experience. You need to crochet a lot. You don't necessarily need 30 years but you need to have made different patterns with different techniques to get construction down. This doesn't always help either. I find lots of crochet projects challenging. Which leads to point 2.

Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Crochet unravels. You can cut the yarn and start again. No one needs to see your mistakes. Just try and fail and fail and fail...then you'll start to succeed.

When I start a pattern, I usually work off of images. Then I plan in my head how I would construct the item.

I usually do a quick and really bad sketch. I can't draw. I'm a 3d person and have no 2d drawing skills. BUT I can visualize my own drawings. That's the important thing.

I have my own code when I write patterns so that I don't have to write out each tedious line as I work a pattern. You'll see that in my notebook.

Once I have a plan and sketch, I just get to crocheting. I write down what works and sometimes what doesn't work. Then I go back and cross things out. I add in side notes about when to stuff or add eyes or whatever.

Then I type up the patterns in a legible format.

One important tip...always write down your specific yarn and hook you used. It's easy to forget what you used.
